I made this little camp fire pit so I could demonstrate campfire magic when I didn't have a firepit. It basically consists of of some 1" flat bar, and a wok. Toss an inch of sand in the base of the wok and you can merrily burn away all day.
Materials
- 76" (~6.5 feet) of 1" flatbar:
- 3x 15" long - Piece A
- 1x 12.75" long - Piece B - Or find a 4" diameter steel pipe and cut a 1" ring ;P
- 3x 6" long - Piece C - If you are not welding, make these 7" long
- 12" to 14" diameter wok
- 3x 1/4" bolts
- 3x 1/4" wingnuts
- 1" diameter jig
- 4" diameter jig
- Right angle jig
- 108 degree angle jig - See this picture
- 1/4" metal drill bit
- Large hammer
- 2 or 3 C-clamps
- Welding machine, or 3 more bolts and some drilling.
- High temperature black paint
Marking
Piece A
- Pick an end of your 15" length. This is now the bottom.
- From the bottom, measure 6 and 1/4 inches up and draw a line across. This is where your 4" half circle will end.
- From the top, measure 2 and 3/8ths inches down and draw a line across. This is where your 1" three quarter circle will end.
- From the top, measure 5 inches down and draw a line across. This is where piece A and C intersect.
- If you are going to weld, skip the rest and repeat for the other two 15" pieces.
- From the top, measure 4 and 1/2 inches down and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is the bolt hole between piece A and C.
- Repeat for the other two 15" pieces.
Piece B
- Pick an end of your 12.75" length. This is now the bottom.
- From the bottom, measure 2 and 1/4 inches up and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is where one leg will connect.
- From the bottom, measure 6 and 1/2 inches up and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is where the second leg will connect.
- From the bottom, measure 10 and 3/4 inches up and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is where the third leg will connect.
Piece C
- Pick an end of your 6" length (or 7" if you are bolting). This is now the bottom.
- From the bottom, measure 1/2 an inch up and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is where you will bolt piece C to B.
- From the bottom, measure 1 inch up and draw a line across. This is where you will make the 90 degree bend.
- If you are going to weld, skip the rest and repeat for the other two 6" pieces.
- From the top, measure 1/2 an inch down and draw a line across with a X in the center. This is the bolt hole between piece A and C.
- From the top, measure 1 inch down and draw a line across. This is where you will make the 108 degree bend.
- Repeat for the other two 6" pieces.
Drilling and Bending
Piece A
- If you're drilling, drill a 1/4" hole at your mark BEFORE bending.
- Bend the bottom of piece A around your 4" jig until you reach the 6 and 1/4 inch mark.
- Bend the top of piece A in the same direction around your 1" jig until you reach the 2 and 3/8ths inch mark.
- Repeat for the other two.
Piece B
- Drill a 1/4" hole at your 3 marks BEFORE bending.
- Bend piece B around your 4" jig until it makes a complete circle. This might take some brute force to convince it into shape.
Piece C
- Drill a 1/4" hole at your 1/2" mark(s) BEFORE bending. (one if you're welding, two if you're not)
- Bend the bottom of piece C to 90 degrees at the 1" mark.
- If you're not welding, bend the top of piece C to 108 degrees at the 1" mark IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
- Repeat for the other two.
Construction
- Assemble like so:
- Repeat 2 more times.
- The final 3 bolts and wingnuts attach each leg to piece B to create a semi collapsable stand. It should look like this when done:
- Paint it all black and your done!
