Is speeding worth while? Maybe. If you ignore factors like tickets, stop signs, and lights, then yes speeding saves time. But if you're in the city, it ain't worth it.

Example Time
Ok, I'm booting it out to Sunshine to go skiing. It's about 150km to get there, about 2/3s of it is posted at 110, the rest at 90. By going 10 over I save:
- 120 in a 110 zone = 2.7s x 100km = 270s
- 100 in a 90 zone = 4s x 50km = 200s
Wow! I saved 470 seconds, or just shy of 8 minutes. Was it worth it? Hmm, maybe if I do 20 over and risk the ticket...
- 130 in a 110 zone = 5s x 100km = 500s
- 110 in a 90 zone = 7.3s x 50km = 365s
This time I saved 865 seconds, or just shy of 15 minutes! Well, that would balance out stopping in Canmore for coffee...But still pretty sad.
Ok, ok, how about Calgary to Vancouver (1000km, similar ratio)?
- 120 in a 110 zone = 2.7s x 666km = 1800s
- 110 in a 90 zone = 4s x 333km = 1333s
I'll save 3133 seconds, or just shy of 52 minutes! Shaving an hour off the ride? Yeah, that's not bad.
Example 4: (this one's for the idiot who almost t-boned me). Doing 70 in a 50 zone. Note: there are stop signs ever 2 blocks (~300m) and major roads about every km. So let's humor him (yes a him) and say he was going 3 km to safeway or something on the back roads.
- 3km / 300m = 10 stop signs
- average of 0 at stop signs flooring it to 70 = ~40km/hr
- average of 0 at stop signs and flooring it to 50 = 30km/hr
- 40 in a 30 zone = 30s x 3km = 90s
Well, well, well, I save 90s. Buuuut hard acceleration and braking costs 3-5km in fuel efficiency per km. How about if I just don't stop?
- 70 in a 30 (equivelent) zone = 68.6s x 3km = 205.8s
I'll save 3 and a half minutes if I don't ever stop or slow down. Considering it only takes 6 minutes to begin with...Oh, some other factors to consider:
- At fault running stop sign: $287.00 and 3 Demerits
- Speeding (15+km): $89.00 and 2 Demerits
- Speeding (20+km): $124.00 and 3 Demerits
- Careless driving: $402.00 and 6 Demerits
- Dangerous Driving (at fault T-bone, no injuries): Federal Criminal Code 249 - Up to 5 years jail, 1 year suspension, etc...Can't be aquitted
- Dangerous Driving causing bodily harm (at fault T-bone): Federal Criminal Code 249 - 5 to 10 years jail, 1 year suspension, etc...Can't be aquitted
Maybe I should have let him hit me, just to get him off the road...But then I'd be carless and prolly in the hospital. Hmmm.
Writing Off my Truck
Damn...28 feet assuming I don't get flipped on the curb...I take back what I said above, I WOULD be in the hospital. Good thing I wasn't hit.
Traffic Lights
Why does speeding not work in the city? Because 1 traffic light will be between 30s and 3 minutes, or speeding by 10km/h for 1 to 5 km without slowing down. Since Calgary likes it's lights, there is no way your going 2+kms without a traffic light unless you are on something designed to move a lot of cars quickly...Like the ring road, or deerfoot. And saving 30s or even a minute is not usually worth it.
