I have absolutely no idea at all why it is called sideways math, but that's what the book I found at work called it. Basically every letter represents a number from 0 to 9. For the division problems, if you get the math correct, the letters in order will spell something.
Ahhh, a little more research reveals a series of grade 5 books called sideways math from wayside school. Now, did the book I got these from copy from this series, or make up their own???
